Preparing for Your Procedure


ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce images. A water-based gel will be used on the skin over the area to be imaged. Some studies (for example, Doppler evaluation of arteries or veins) require no preparation. However, special preparation is required for the following exams:

  • Abdomen or Aorta. Nothing by mouth the night before the exam. If the procedure is done in the afternoon, then you must not eat or drink for at least 4 hours prior to the procedure.

  • Pelvic or Obstetrical (OB) . Drink 16 ounces (two large glasses) of water one hour before your exam. Do not empty your bladder until after the exam or unless instructed to do so by the technologist.
